fall in love with these finds: a last-minute valentine’s gift guide

February 11, 2013 - Leave a Response

hello friends!

yes, it’s been a little while — but never a better time to resurface than just before the most romantic day of the year!

pardon the pun, but i love valentine’s day. there’s just something so lovely (i did it again!) about a day when the world gets rosier and it’s totally ok to be full-on cheesy. when stark office lobbies are overtaken with gorgeous bouquets and heart-shaped candy boxes, and red and pink reign supreme in every outfit.

so you can imagine how giddy the little holiday treasure hunt i’ve been on has made me. take a peek at the spoils!

accessories to adore from francesca’s

how darling is this valentine’s display? i made a recent stop at this hometown favorite of mine, knowing i’d find the perfect pieces to sport on our special night out.

i picked up these blush studs and another-little-statement-something to be revealed in a future post.

just the right word: vintage dictionary page rings from suki bikoux

suki bijoux vintage dictionary page ring

i was introduced to this encinitas-based designer (and veritable queen of up-cycling!) at the december san diego style bloggers meet-up, and was immediately drawn to these unique creations. while i went home with the “faith” version, how fitting is the “love” one? i am so not doing her work justice by just showing this one example, so make sure to “like” her facebook page for the full collection!

wear your heart on your sleeve — or wrist: brighton sweetness

Brighton bonbon hearts wallet

i definitely need to be spending more time in a brighton store. how totally sweet is this bonbon hearts wallet (which has a matching iPad case, key fob and cosmetics case, mind you)?? the cheerful print just makes me want to bake some cupcakes and paint my lips a bright pink!

speaking of pink lips, give nars’ “carthage” a try! such a fun touch for day or night.

and don’t forget the littlest valentines: cute-as-cupid headbands from bitty baby bands

i can’t remember when i exactly first stumbled upon this carlsbad-based accessories brand — but boy, am i glad i did!! my pal kristina has built such an amazing (and affordable!) line of hair candy for both young ones and their mommies. it’s like Christmas everytime i receive a bbb package, knowing a fully handmade gift awaits me or my little lady.

i’m currently crushing on this valentine’s day piece — just.so.precious.

sassy stockings: a last-minute gift guide

December 22, 2012 - Leave a Response

so, if you’re anything like me, it’s like four days before christmas — and while you had all the best intentions to really plan out super-fun gifts…you didn’t.

elle webb style to the rescue! after all the fun finds i uncovered last year, i have been so excited to present the second-annual official elle webb style holiday gift guide. this year, it just has *much* more of an abbreviated, last-minute focus (busy toddler plus four-months-pregnant will do that to you!).

when putting together the list last year, i shared a bit about my inspiration behind, if you will, “curating” the best in trinkety goodness. and that spirit continues this year, with a roundup of special little somethings that caught my eye.

hit me with your best shot

disposable funny cameras at urban outfitters

while hunting for kitschy extras for a recent party, i came across these delights at urban outfitters. remember those cheesy cameras people used to place on their wedding reception tables, that featured pre-printed designs of wedding bells and champagne flutes? enter the modern, more hilarious versions.

i opted for the “unicorns & rainbows” and “yolo-and-other-crazy-phrases” models. i’m dying to see the “after” shots, plus doesn’t taking film to be developed feel so gleefully “old school”?

look good (and feel even better about it!)

vava vida teal dahlia travel bag

some people love shoes. i also am a major shoe-fan, but my real passion is bags. it doesn’t even matter what type. trendy handbags, monogrammed canvas totes, or a myriad of can-this-really-be-this-cute recyclable shopping bags — i’ll take them all. may be time for a support group.

so you can imagine what stood out when browsing the site of new san diego startup vava vida (read more on them here). in spite of my addiction, i can feel good about purchasing the amazing teal dahlia travel bag. made by members of a women’s co-op near new delhi, sporting this arm candy actually helps a fellow female provide for her family. now that’s empowering!

velvety smooth

velvet manicure ciaté

my sweet friend kelly just gifted me with a fabulous velvet manicure kit by ciaté. while i haven’t had a spare second to give it a spin, the minute i saw the box — i was hooked. so perfect for the holidays, and even the busiest mom can warmly welcome a nail-sized dose of glam!

call me, maybe

target mossimo glittery iPhone holder case

yes, i know. now it will be in your head for the rest of the day. but doesn’t humming this little tune secretly make you a bit more cheerful?

so will this glittery wristlet / cell phone holder from target. the finishing touch of sparkle for that christmas eve cocktail party or starbucks run before holiday light-seeing.

and while you’re at target, make sure to pick up the elf eye palette. the.best.five.dollars.you’ll.ever.spend. who needs more of a description than that?

happy holidays! may they be merry and bright.

stylish mom monday: channel your inner art director

December 12, 2012 - Leave a Response

ok, ok — it’s not technically monday. but i’m taking creative license with the date — hence, the theme of this post.

there’s a part of me that secretly dreams about concepting brilliant layouts, being a total typography expert, and mastering the most effective use of white space.  (that’s what a decade of secretly-envying-the-designer-whose-shoulder-you’re-peeking-over will do to you!)

enter my art director alter-ego.

but – until i take a huge gamble and head to design school — i’ll have to just play (er, dress) the part.  and what better time to look super artsy, than when making one’s inaugural trip to the new arclight at utc?  we celebrated my sweetie by heading up to la jolla to catch the new bond, and boy, were we spoiled.  specially selected (and super-comfy!) seats and pre-flick apps at the cafe?  might have to be a while before we hit up our local amc again.

and since these posts are dedicated to crazed moms still trying to look cute, let’s talk about the pros of this look.  black, black and more black — need i say more?  i welcome the slimming, plus you can add your own personalized touches through accessories, shoes, etc.  (i took the opportunity to try the trendy oversize glasses i’m seeing everywhere — did i pull them off?)

bubbles and baubles: second san diego style bloggers meet-up

December 7, 2012 - 2 Responses

ask anyone in a creative profession where they find their inspiration, and you’ll almost always hear an answer about others in their field.  and for me, this is exactly what makes being involved with the san diego style bloggers group — an amazing network of oh-so-talented fashion and lifestyle bloggers — so wonderful.

i couldn’t wait for our second meet-up (read more on the first get-together here), not only to meet some new faces and catch up with those i had already met (or had a cyber-relationship with!  ha!) — but also to finally check out bubbles boutique!  having seen it on many a drive up fifth ave, i had no idea the treat i was in for!

it made the perfect setting for our event — with sparkles, sparkles and more sparkles!  seriously, everywhere you looked something glam or glittery was calling your name.  i’m already planning my return trip to buy them out of several accessories that made my mental gift list!

the glam factor was out of control.  it’s ok if you’re drooling.

don’t you just want to be here?

i was also looking forward to finding out more about our other sponsor for the evening, a local start-up called vava vida.  vava vida is a socially conscious online retailer, sourcing goods from all over the world that fit in one or more of four categories: fair trade, eco-friendly, certified organic or made in the usa.  as they put it, their vision is to “imagine a world where everyone is empowered and able to provide for their family and community; a healthy planet of peace and prosperity for generations to come.”  i can certainly buy into that!

vava vida kashmir bangles — find them here.

and i did.  within seconds of entering bubbles and being warmly greeted by ashley from vava vida, their turquoise murano bracelet — crafted by local artisans in indonesia – caught my eye (and kept it!).  i left that evening with this gorgeous new find.  hint: it goes so fab with leopard!  i also enjoyed parlaying un peu de français with antoine, the vava vida president.

keep your eyes peeled for the second-annual elle webb style holiday gift guide, as you might find more vava vida goodness there!

i also had the chance to meet suki of suki bijoux, and made my way home with one of her super-fun creations.  more on her in a following “designer spotlight” post!

thank you again to paulina and rachel for organizing such a fabulous evening.  and a special shout-out to jen malcriada, my fellow floral pant-lover who’s even more kick-a in person than in her sassy posts (and who i just saw was named to a “top bloggers over 40″ list — you go, girl!).

happy holidays to all!

xo,
elle webb

stylish mom monday: i’ve got a furry feeling

November 12, 2012 - Leave a Response

forever 21 belted furry vest

it’s officially fall in southern california!

after months of groaning about our unusually warm temperatures, we are finally enjoying a delightful dose of chilly.  and when the weatherbug app shows a number less than 70, what does any style-minded female do?  break out the super-cute winter wear, of course!

i bought this vest last winter on a much-needed retail therapy tour, and am loving that i can finally sport it again.  i hadn’t tried it belted yet, so i ventured into some new territory here.  fur is an easy way to dress up a casual long-sleeve tee and trouser jeans (perfect for casual friday), and feel free to add some punch on the bottom with animal print heels!  (bonus: it also can hide whatever the littles spilled on you while getting ready!)

how did you celebrate the belated coming of fall?

fashion week san diego: “art & beauty” night recap

October 6, 2012 - Leave a Response

beehive bellus academy fashion week san diego

i was one excited gal walking up to the “art & beauty of fashion” event on wednesday night.  i think a large part of that excitement stemmed from a possible makeup artist hidden deep down inside, who couldn’t wait to see the bellus artists in action.

to say i left feeling incredibly inspired, could win for “understatement of the year.”  from just being at the super swank w hotel, to watching oh-so-talented stylists in action, to being surrounded by beautiful original artwork — i was ready to conquer every creative dream i’ve ever had!  oh, and not to mention all.the.amazing.san.diego.style.  it’s official, friends – we have an incredibly fashionable town!  i could have filled an entire lookbook from my people-watching.

what probably stayed with me the most, though, was the video profile of the designers playing on the second floor.  produced by mahal style, this documentary was a touching tribute to not only the natural talent and skill they all possess, but the courage and perseverance they’ve had to show time and time again to arrive at where they are today.  as a working mom, the work-family balance segment with sharie ellis of love is a devil particularly struck a chord with me; and i love, love, love this quote from stacie may: “it’s ok not to follow what everyone else does.”

i’ve also found that one of the most fun aspects of these events, are the new people you meet.  while waiting in the drink line, i felt so lucky to bump into allison andrews, founder and director of fashion week.  looking darling in a multicolored frock by the aforementioned stacie may, she couldn’t have been more welcoming.  and just ahead of me in this line were the ladies from terracotta ny, two former investment bankers who just launched a gorgeous neckwear line.  (to yidi and alina, thanks for letting me pal around with you!)  and to close out the night, i ran into my sweet friend annie martin — check out her fun blog here.

enjoy the shots below, and look forward to seeing everyone tonight at the runway shows!

date night: gray floral with red accents

October 2, 2012 - Leave a Response

target floral skinny Jean what to wear for date night

polka dot clutch with rose

red high heels linea paolo nordstrom rack

it’s not often my husband and i escape our adorable-but-havoc-wreaking toddler. so when we are blessed with a glorious night out, my mind goes immediately to planning an evening look (as it should, right?). even the most stressful week suddenly seems lighter with a dress-up opportunity!

as you may remember from a recent post, a darling pair of gray floral skinnies from target made my list of fall floral picks. i finally picked them up, skipped gleefully out of the store, and have been experimenting ever since.

this was new territory for me, to say the least, but it’s been fun to sport them in different ways — even for someone sized more marilyn than twiggy.

i eventually landed on pairing them with more neutrals — a belted black express cardigan and loose charcoal forever 21 tank — putting the emphasis on bold accessories. i’ve been a bit shy about rocking these uh-mazing red heels from nordstrom rack, and this surprise polka dot find from a company exhibiting next to a tradeshow i attended last year, has been sitting on a closet shelf.

so, what better time to break out these accessories-in-hiding than for a special occasion?

we made our way to the red door in mission hills. i had only heard good things, but had no idea the dinner that awaited us would be so, so scrumptious. and the paso robles red that started it all off? wow. i do love me a fine central coast wine.

grilled flat iron steak and wedge salad for me, and shrimp/chorizo app and pork schnitzel for him. by far, one of the most delicious eatings we’ve shared.

what does date night look like for you? would love to hear your go-to outfits and favorite local spots!

old navy polka dot chambray shirt leopard print heels

sometimes i get a bit delusional and think i can pull off cropped pants. yesterday was one of those “sometimes.”

hopefully the polka dot chambray and leopard print heels added a touch of much-needed sass (and offset my not-so-sample-size bottom half!), but i still think the look screams mom on the sidelines with orange slices.

oh well, that stage of my life is around the corner — might be good to just go ahead and acknowledge it. :) bring on the mini-van!

stylish mom monday: an eye for eiffel

vintage Eiffel tower photo

“a walk about paris will provide lessons in history, beauty, and in the point of life.” ― thomas jefferson

i remember my first trip to paris so vividly. literally, my inaugural steps out of the métro and up the trocadéro station stairs, are forever emblazoned on my brain.

the somewhat-terrifying teenage realization of being an ocean away from everything i knew, was soon replaced with the giddiness of first glimpsing a monument i’d come to know on paper for so many years.

young girl in paris

(a 17-year-old me, june 1996)

i had no idea something could be so grand — so all-consuming of every emotion and textbook image memory. it took my breath away, in the most amazing way possible. and even as i write this, i still get a little choked up thinking back to my sheer awe.

i wish i’d realized at the time how fabulous of an experience i was having. you can miss so much of the significance in where life takes you when you’re young, especially as a homesick 17-year-old. now, though, i’d have an apartment lined up within 24 hours and my family sold on staying across the pond!

so you can imagine how excited i was this morning — while digging through some recently untouched parts of my closet — to stumble upon this sparkly tower necklace i’d purchased at forever 21 (probably a year ago!) and completely forgotten. it went right on, of course, and then inspired this post!

with all that said, i happily bring you today’s “stylish mom monday” list of tower-inspired touches to add that delightful bit of french flair. and remember, don’t take for granted how fabulous today could seem in a year from now!

enjoy!
